This was a vibration investigation involving operational deflection shape analysis on a large scale covering the steam turbine generator set, turbine island, piping, condenser and structure.

The 500 MW steam turbine had recurring bearing failures which was never successfully identified and addressed by the turbine OEM Vendor. As it involved several components and different suppliers of the entire turbine installation, a full scale independent vibration investigation was required to identify root cause of the problem.

The measurements and analysis were under- taken with full load, part load, full speed no load conditions, and bump tests of components during plant shutdown.

The findings showed likely origin and causes of the fault, which was presented to the OEM for remedial actions.
